Elliptical search coils have many benefits over standard round coils which are commonly used on metal detectors. Elliptical coils are like having two coils in a single housing. Not only will you retain the depth of the larger circumference of the 12" coil for deeper targets but you will get the more concentrated search power of the smaller round 9" coil center for smaller targets from surface ground to mid-level depths.
